The engaging mechanisim is worn out. These starters die from two failures, usualy one or the other, but one failure mode is more than enuff ;-)
The starter pinion gear bushing wears out so badly the pinion doden't retract and/or the brusshes/commutator wear out..pinion bushing appears to be yours Mate.. Bad news.. fix it Now!
Delaying is Fool's territory given a rebuilt starter with warantee is $100 and 15 to 30 mins labour... Ring gears are Lots more :-)
