I did this last week on my 88' and it's made like your 92' model. The end case was removed just as you described. It's not too hard either. I also had 2 plugs (electrical connects) on the top portion of this case that simply were unplugged/disconnected. I then put the entire casing in a vise and went to work on it with my a hacksaw. There's a gasket in there that creates a seal that you'll remove from that cover before you place it into the vise(don't want to destroy it ya know). Also, when you remove the cover you'll probably get about 1/2 cup of oil draining out as well. Other than that it's very simple really. Took me about 1.5 to R & R the whole thing. Again very simply and straight forward work. When did they make the change? I don't know about that but I know someone posted about 2 weeks ago that they changed theirs on one of the newer body styles, using poly as I did, and they did say that the older type units as either easier to do or a better fit when using poly. Replacing with oem, I haven't a clue. I'm only talking about using poly.
See Ya,
Phil
