I also have leather seats in my '87 and rarely, if ever, get shocked. I think the only times is when it is very dry out and I cannot recall the last time it happened. However, when I've driven cars with cloth seats I literally got shocked on a constant basis. From my experience with this I do not believe it is due to the buildup of static while the car is traveling down the road. I say this because I have attempted to circumvent the shock by grabbing the door after opening it, putting my foot on the ground, and then getting out and still got shocked. The static felt is what happens when you rub your clothing across a cloth seat and the friction creates a charge. This is just like when you could rub your feet across a carpet and then touch a something metal and get a shock. While I'm not an electrical engineer I have been working with electronics for 20+ years and this is what makes sense to me from the empirical evidence I've gathered. If I am incorrect in what I've said here I would appreciate finding out more as it is a bit intersting how this phenomenom occurs.
