Hmm - somehow forgot to put a name in.
A lot depends on exactly what system you have. I suspect the CS has the LH2.4.2 system which allows you to pull codes. If it's Trionic, you can read codes using the CE light in the '93.

there is a variety of information there on pulling codes.
A backfire can be due to a lot of things. Yes, a vacuum leak was typical in the old days, when engines ran fairly rich. Engines run pretty lean these days, so even though a vacuum leak provides oxygen-rich air, their isn't much extra fuel around.
I think Derek is onto something. If a plug stops firing for a bit, you'll be dumping raw fuel into the exhaust. Eventually it'll find something hot and some oxygen, and bang, you get a backfire. Do you see rough running, missing, etc, especially at speed? That might point to the DI
