I've done this job on 3 different 9Ks and it's not easy, but doable. Removing the false firewall made the job a whole lot easier, plus I found it was rusting to no end. I correctd that with some sandpaper and paint while I had it apart.
Pulling back those a/c hoses will stress you because you have to put some uumph into it. But go ahead and replace the heater core while you're in there.
There are 2 types of heater cores....those that are bad, and those that are going bad. Which is yours?
