OK. I think I'm making myself feel a bit better. I also checked
out gapa.com, and they showed both the Moog/TRW/Federal Mogul part
I got (with the short shaft and no lock ring groove) as well as the
ScanTech version (looks exactly like the old one, longer shaft with the
lock ring groove).
So, I _think_ either is acceptable. I can't imagine that little lock ring
is going to do a whole lot to hold the ball joint into the spindle.
However, if anyone has a more positive confirmation, I'd feel a whole lot
better.
On the other hand, replacing the control arm rear bushings went
fine, actually easier than expected. The old ones were definitely shot.
(The other reason I need to get things back together is that I have an
appointment an an indy tomorrow to replace the inner tie rod. I wasn't
comfortable doing that myself. And, actually, I was going to replace the
tie rod end myself today, but I realized they'll have to disassemble it
anyways, so I might as well give them the new part I've got and let them
argue with it...)
Thanks for letting me ramble...
