Sorry if this ends up as a re-post- I tried earlier and AOL threw me out halfway thru posting last time. Not planning to re-invent the wheel, but I had some experiences with modifying my shift linkage that no-one else has commented on yet. I have a '92 9000s, and found that my shift linkage is "different"- a term others have applied to me as well in the past (in part for driving a Saab, and a non-turbo one at that) But hey, its paid for, there's no turbo lag, and I can still play WRC on the way to work, even with only 158lb-ft of torque- it's all about momentum.
Anyway, my shift linkage uses circlips above and below the ball to locate it, so I used my garage full of precision machine tools (shifter rod chucked up in drill press with a dremel to machine new circlip grooves) to move the rod down .5". I also had to cut away part of the plastic sleeve on the linkage base, and part of a bracket for the bottom of the dash to allow the base to be spacered up .5" in front.
Due in part to the fact that my 3y/o son was loose in the garage with the biggest hand tools I own (I'm still trying to find out why anyone would need a 27mm wrench under the dash), it took about 4ish hours total. Well worth the effort, though, with much shorter, more direct throws.
Plus, since my miniscule amount of go-fast $$ is wrapped up in karting, I can boast to the wife that not only will it help me get to the office 3.6sec faster, it was free.
Waiting for more snow to continue my personal rendition of the Swedish Rally.....
