I've received several inquirys about the Abbott 308mm brake kits. So for the benefit of all;

The 308mm brake kit is a pretty slick piece of engineering.

Unlike most brake kits that use adapter plates, Abbott starts with the caliper mount from the Saab Viggen/9-5 Aero. A 10mm slot is machined in the mounting surface and a steel plate is welded in the slot. The plate is then drilled and tapped to match the Saab 9000 brake mounts.

The rest of the caliper is stock, so rebuilds or replacement is as close as the Saab dealer.

The 5 bolt pattern in the 308mm Viggen rotors is plugged, and the 9000 4 bolt pattern drilled in the appropriate location. The inner diameter of the Viggen rotors fits perfectly over the 9000 bearing/hub.

Installation is smooth and easy. Just get the calipers on the correct side. Also, the backing plate is removed for clearance. This requires a moderately serious bearing puller as the bearings are glued on with some type of sealer.

The kit requires 16 inch Aero wheels, and with brand new pads it is still a close fit. As the pads wear the calipers move inward and the clearance opens up. The swept area is up about 20%.

The performance is superb. The rotors are groved similar to Powerslot. The first time it rained they lapped in well, yielding some serious stopping power. They are very progressive and controlable as well. Best brakes this side of a Turbo porsche, on par with BMW M series. When I drive my wife's stock 96 CS my first impression is always 'whoa this thing has no brakes'.

While the Abbott is a bit pricey, the pads and rotors are wearing at about half the rate of stock 9000 brakes. Given where I live (couldn't be my driving style) I would get between 20 and 30,000 miles on the stock 9000 brakes. I have 30,000 miles on the Abbott kit and having recently measured the rotors, they are about half used up.
