Hey John!
perfect timing on this one. My father and I just replaced the Forward accumulator spring on my 88 9000 turbo. It was not that bad of a job. before we did it the trans shifted like utter crap. huge clunks when put into drive. Long, drawn out upshifts. And if i was on a hill the 4-3 downshift was downright dangerous. I thought the trans was on its way out.

Here's there repair deal. This is what i did. I'm not sure how different the Turbo/NA autoboxes are, but this is what i did to mine. It should help.
1: Take off the battery tray and battery. Take out the windshield wash tank too.
Make sure the trans is in "1" before you pull out the valve body.
2: Get the cover off of the trans.
3: Take off all the large headed torx bits from the top of the valve body. (T-27) The top of the valve body is split into two smaller pieces. you do not want to separate these, you want the whole valve body out.
4: Take off pipe from valve body to trans. its a little bending metal tube
5: Pull valve body out.
6: You now want to flip the valve body over and there will be a risen section with a plate on the end attached with 4 torx bits. (again T-27).
7:Pull off the far right Torx bit on this plate and also the top and bottom ones too. The one to the left should not be taken off. Just loosen it.
8: Now swing the plate towards the left torx bit.
The spring is under pressure be careful it doesnt fly out at you. You might have to use plyers or something to pop out the spring/plunger assembly, just be careful not to chew anything up.
9: Put in new spring and re assemble everything
Now when you take the valve body out be prepared, you will be spilling some trans fluid.
This is most likely the cause of your problems, mine rides so smooth now its amazing. Like a new car i just can't belive it.
Ok... here is a link that diagrams the stuff better.
Make sure you compensate for lost fluid.
Make sure car is in 1st gear obviously with parking brake on.
Be careful with the torx bits, they break so easy the screws are prety tight. We broke one today but luckily were able to bang in a T-30 and pull it out. We had an extra bolt from my spare (dead) trans.
that should be it.
sorry this was so long... But goood luck, its not very hard.
Let me know how you fare.
Good luck
