If the EDU thinks the tank is dry, it'll show dashes for miles to empty.
If the temp gauge wasn't also acting up, I'd say it was a problem with the wiring to the fuel level sender. But since the temp and fuel level are both driven by the EDU, it points to that as the source.
Cleaning the battery terminals won't hurt. Have you noticed the cranking voltage being lower as of late?
The problem may just go away, it being some hiccup in the EDU processor. If so, great. If not, it could be a poor connection at the EDU board, which isn't exactly a dream to get to.
I doubt it's the alternator brushes. Startup voltage is purely a function of the battery and associated wiring. The alternator doesn't come on line until the engine starts and runs at idle. The EDU works fine at 12 volts, which would be the voltage if the alternator wasn't working at all and the engine was running on battery alone. It's when the cranking voltage drops into the 6-7 volt range that the EDU messes up. However, if you're seeing low charging voltage (the voltage when the engine is running - should be in the 13 volt range), then the alternator may not be putting out enough current to BOTH power the car and charge the battery - that would result in lower cranking voltage due to a poorly charged battery.
Good luck!
