The manual calls for Dextron II. II is no longer available, and the III is generally recognized as the compatible replacement.
I like to use Castrol, but I recognize that as a personal bias with no hard data to show Castrol is any better or worse than any other major brand. It hasn't screwed me yet.
Saab does not recommend synthetic transmission fluids. A lot may go into that, but I believe that's simply because they haven't spent the money to test compatibility with the different formulations out there. Is synthetic fluid better? Yes. Will it work better or worse in the 9000's ZF transmission? I don't know. It might. Or it might cause your transmission to dissolve into bit. OK, probably not. Personally, I'm not willing to chance it, so I don't use synthetic, and instead change the fluid regularly with a quality non-synthetic.
Something to keep in mind as you poll people. Transmissions will break or last forever, despite people changing or not changing their tranny fluid. So statements like "I used XYZ fluid, and two weeks later my tranny exploded" is anectodal, not necessarily a cause-and-effect. Not unless they did a root cause analysis. After all, ice cream causes crime - Ice cream sales go up in summer, and the crime rate goes up in summer - cause and effect!
