Saab 9000 SE Auto'87 B202 2.0 16v DHOC Turbo, Bosh LH injection

I had the same exact problem. I fitted an open K&N cone filter, inside the wheel well, in the mornings it idled badly, on the freeway (Motorway) it jerked badly when I accelerated as if running out of petrol, and my fuel consumption went up.

I posted my problem a Year and a half ago, and the responses I got was that open air filters are fine, and no one had any problems. A garage/Abbott Racing UK, told me the Saab engine/turbo needed the air box in order to boost properly, but the postings I got said that was rubbish. At the time I believed the garage, so I replaced the air box, but the symptoms remained because the engine settings had changed to accommodate the extra air, so I had to get it serviced again, to set it with the air box.

But I look in performance magazines, and see porches, Subaru's, Evo's, Cosworths etc With these open air filter, so Why is the Saab engine different?

I paid at least £120/$240 for cone filter, so at present I'm contemplating refitting it. But I will fit a heat shield to cover the wheel well hole, and also make a hole in the front bumper, to aid in the Ram Air effect, and also get it set up on a rolling road to make fuel/air/ timing accurate. Maybe that will help?

But reading your post reminded me of the problems I had, so let me know if you manage to over come the problems, and if you noticed any improvements, apart from a loud noise, people always say the sound is so much better, I want to know if it really improves performance, and is it noticeable?

One thing I'd like to note, at the time I fitted the air filter, I had no mods to the engine, and it was totally stock. Now I've got an FSE fuelling valve, Jetex exhaust, CAT Bypass, Magnacor Leads. So maybe the filter will work better?

What about your car, what mods have you done?
