tensioner pulley shock

Hey guys me and my mechanic friend were doing the serpentine belt on my 93 Aero along with the idle pulley and the tensioner pulley and when compressing the tensioner pulley the shock sort of got out of whack so we took it off and took it apart and all this fluid came out. Should we even bother trying to put it back together? Anyone else ever taken this apart before? What is the fluid inside and need we replace it?
Thanks in advance
Annie
