rubber molding on door is a female dog

Hi all, I have a 1995 Aero that is holding up well except for the outside rubber door molding on the passenger side (the fat one that goes across the door to protect from errant shopping carts and such).
I have all the grommets intact and even bought a new one for the last hole (5.50! what a rip) and still no luck holding it in. At least 3 of the clips have pulled out of the door and they have the grommets stuck on them. So what I am left with is a flapping piece of rubber with all the clips and grommets but nothing in the door itself-just the holes.
When I put the new grommet in the door it stayed in but when I pushed the molding with the clip into it, the grommet pulled out and stayed stuck on the clip. About half the molding is still secured but it flaps so much I fear it will soon come all the way off. How can I reattach this, any ideas? Thanks in advance
