Oaky sounds like you got a lot going here.
First the wire, depends on what ratings the legacy amps are giving you. If you are talking about 1000w max power, it would mean about 500w rms. This is a little much for 8 gauge but shouldn't be enough of a problem to make thigs shut off.
The sub... I 'm not exactly following what you did. Does the sub have 2 4 ohm voice coils or 2 2 ohm voice coils? Either way when I wire a sub I like to do it at the sub itself. There sub be a + and - on the amp marked for bridging. A wire should run from the + on the amp to the + on one VC. Then a wire should run from - of that VC to the + of the other VC. A wire should then run from the - of the 2nd VC to the - of the amp. This will give you a series hook-up.
Also what kind of box is it in? How well is it sealed ..etc?
Also how did you split the 8 guage?
