t was pretty imaculate, only thing not working one headlamp wiper. Dark blue not met, nice colour. New tyres, exhaust, brakes, fsh. Silent smooth engine felt more like a V6. No smoke/rattles, clean engine bay. Went for a drive, put it in R to back out, very smooth. D to pull off up the incline and immediately struck by 1) how 'crisp' the box felt, gripping the wheels the instant I shifted to D, no soggy delay like on lots of autos. 2) how snappy the take off is in 1st, indeed I wonder about the lack of traction control as I was easily able to spin the wheel pulling out, though it had lots of grip. When on the move, nice, but hey, where is the punch? Is the difference between the Aero/LPT really that much, because this felt very good pulling off but then felt like it was waiting for a big boost to come in which never did. It was competent but never exciting, revving further seemed pointless, if anything less power over 3.5k. Good strong torque from idle though - seems to boost real low. Ride, ok. Nowhere near as good as Merc/my bmw. Handling - couldn't test but definalty more effort and more turns on the wheel to drive, the Merc 300TE was effortless and fantasticly easy to drive compared. But it didn't pull off like the Saab! Equipment - bar the traction control had everything, like it. Dash, bit tacky the veneer was again nowhere in the Merc class and a bit of a 'opressive' layout, makes the car feel cramped. Which brings me on to the point that I am 6'4, this car had no sunroof and with the seat fully down (manual seat) I still did not have enough headroom. The bottom of the seat was too small, not long enough and basically it felt cramped compared to my VW Passat. Boot space good but very intrusive arches, losing a good 9inches over my passat which is also estate. Overall I'm confused still.... I think if the performance had really been something it would have tipped the scales. Question is do I go the Saab route and up the boost or should I just go for the Merc which a) I may not be able to afford b) loses the simplicity of a 4 cylinder engine c) hasn't got the punch (if hpt) of the Saagb and d) loses about 7mpg to the saab which is very good on fuel.
Comments please? I was impressed by the way the auto box drove - it was better than the merc and as good as my bmw (also a ZF box).
Greg.
