check engine light flashes 4 times, any suggestion?

I just own the 95' 9K CS for a few months which has given me alot headaches.
The check engine light come on again. It flashes 4 times when I turn the ignition switch to ON but not start the car. The flashing code indicates that the fuel injection system coolant temp. sensor has falty function.
The haynes manual states: ' The sensor is a thermistor. The fuel injection ECU supplies the sensor with a set of voltage, and by measuring the current flowing in the sensor it determines the engine temperature. the information is then used, in conjuction wiht other inputs, to control the injector opening time. If the sensor circuit should fail to... the ECU back-up facility will assume an engine temp. of 20 C. in the event the fuel injection system will continue to run, albeit at reduced efficieny.'
From the above statement, it seems that the car can still run for long time without serious damage, is that true? I am really reluctant to see the dealer which had charged me too much.
please give me advices on the matter.
Thanks
Peter
