I'd say probably NOT the water pump. The typical failure mode of a water pump is for the seal to slowly wear. It starts as a drip from the weep hole in the pump, and very slowly gets worse. You usually see coolant on the ground in small puddles for quite a while. Even then, it usually doesn't fail as 'losing coolant like crazy.'

Sight unseen, I'd put my money on a split hose. Hoses get tired and fail. Make sure you move the hoses around. When the system is under pressure, it'll open up a split in a hose. Once the system lost pressure, and it wouldn't be pressurized after you removed the cap to add coolant - there is no pressure to open up the split in the hose, so it doesn't leak much.
Dry everything off as much as possible, and wiggle some hoses around. I'll bet you find a split, most probably near an end.

I'll bet you didn't have coolant from the overflow cap - I'll bet that leaking coolant found its way onto a pulley or belt and was flung up onto the underside of the hood, where it found its way onto the top of the coolant reservoir. Not a guarantee, but just a guess.
