Are you sure it's the compressor pulley. A failing tensioner could cause the belt to be loose and noisy.
I would never discharge an a/c system if it can be avoided. If you are replacing a compressor, you have to flush the system and replace the receiver/drier. I would have the vacuum and recharge done by a specialty AC shop. I would not use Pep Boys. AC parts are expensive and the knowledge required to use the equipment is specialized.
I am guessing you have the Seiko compressor. The clutch on that compressor is pretty easy to take apart and I think you can replace the pulley without even removing the compressor from the car. BillJ has the compressor clutch shim removal written up on his site. I doubt removing the pulley can be too much more complicated than that.
I have a Seiko compressor that failed internally on my work bench. I tried to take the clutch off, but it's rusted onto the shaft. I can try harder to get it apart and see how tough it is to dismantle the pulley. The grooves on the pulley are a little bent, but the bearing seems to spin freely. You can have it if I can get it apart. Email me for details.
