Lemans with Steve McQueen is as good as it gets

The first 40 minutes there's no dialogue, just the preparations for the race. This is the ultimate gearhead film. Steve McQueen was a real byGOd race car driver, not some Hollywood posure. He starred in and directed it and paid for a big chunk of it because Hollywood wouldn't. He made the film to give people a sense of what car racing is really about--what it's really like to risk your life for a living. There is very little in the way of extraneous plot devices--it's about racing period! I mean you've got Ford GT40's, Porche 917's, and so forth doing 220 mph--in the rain. They just happened to make this film the year that all these wonderful race cars were made obsolete, so they had a lot of suddenly worthless race cars to use in film. A lot of the footage is from the actual race but the crash scenes were made using real cars. This was before special effects and all the phoney techniques they use now. They used some cars with radio controls so the result is very relistic. There's one scene where they are racing in the rain and doing 200mph down a straight and you have the drivers view when a car comes out of nowhere and slams into him. I break into a sweat everytime I watch it. The movie was impossible to find for about 30 years but has been reissued. It was not particularly popular when it came out because it was not geared for the general movie viewing public.
