Special tools and 5-spds

One of these days it will come to pass that the 5-spd in the 97 Aero will need attention. Some whine in 1st and some clicking in second. While the problem(s?) might be minor and I may not need to do anything for a long while, I knwo that I am apt to put stresses ont he tranny that will shorten its life compared to just putting around.
That said I've considered getting a junkyard tranny and rebuilding it before I need it. So the question is, how many special tools does it require and what do they cost... if I am looking at $500 in tools just to do the job, I am apt to let someone else doit... unless there is significant gain my doign your own rebuild and using better/more durable parts. If the "I get what I want" fairy were to bless me, I'd be putting in 3" front to back exhaust, and putting some chip mods on it, and all the accompanying modifications to the suspension to handle all this extra power.
In reading over TSN over the last year, it seem plain that when putting more zip in the 9000, most other bits need to be enhanced to deal with the added stresses getting the power to the pavement. Does the tranny need this same beefing up? And can it be done reasonabley, or should it be jobbed out to a tranny shop?
I don't think I'll take my modifications as far as Bill Cass has, I don;t think I'd like the hard ride his car sounds like it has... while I'd certainly appreciate the handling and cornering, the Aero is buckboard enough as it is... I've also driven a Viggen for 18 months, and I'd say it is more of a hard ride than the aero.
thnx all..
