I've done a few cross year ECU swaps. Even with the factory wiring diagrams this has been challenging as the factory diagrams don't always precisely match what I've found in the cars.
As an example, 1997 ECUs work in 1996 cars, however 1996 ECUs in a 1997 car will 'Check Engine' for 'Bad missing or open Evap Purge Valve'. The ECU wiring harnesses are different, even though the factory electrical diagram shows that 1996 and 1997 ECUs are identical.
The factory diagram for the 1998 Trionic is a separate drawing from the 96-97 diagram. I haven't studied it in great detail, but there are some obvious changes around the O2 sensor wiring.
Doesn't mean the 98 ECU won't work in a 96 but there might be some wiring issues to resolve.
Putting the 98 ECU into a 96 will be much easier than putting the 98 ECU into a 95 or earlier model. OBD II ECUs expect more sensors and if they aren't 100% happy with what they find they fall back to base boost, a measly 150HP.
Best of Luck
