Don, you don't need bottomless pockets at all - well, for a race car you'd need them considerably deeper. The first thing a turbo 9000 needs is a 3" exhaust - at least to the cat', at a minimum. That'll significantly reduce the back-pressure that the turbo 'sees'. Next, you could simply open up the intake by removing the snorkel and drilling a few more holes, in key locations, on your intake-air box. Just those simple mod's will make a difference - they'll also satisfy the requirements needed for any software changes - that'll give you staggering results to both torque and hp. I would recommend concentrating on the suspension before the software: get a good pair of aftermarket 'performance' shock/struts, replace all the suspension bushings that need so, and a good set of performance-rated tires. The 9000 brakes are good, but not for racing. If you want to race, it's going to cost - bigger brakes
($1-2k for the fronts only) means bigger wheels and that means bigger bucks. Regardless, it makes no sense to have 'performance' without having the best tires, suspension and brakes. I don't race my 9000, but it is modified. Here's a rough idea of my fixed costs - it doesn't include my labor time:
'94 Aero - $8000, '98 B234R drivetrain - $2600, '97 front/rear suspension - $1000, Exhaust - $400, Injectors - $200, Intercooler - $700, MapTun - $600, Tires - $300 (SZ-50's), Brakes - $300, Bushings - $100, Miscellaneous - $500. That's a rough total of $15k. Remember, everything except the exhaust welding, I've done myself on this vehicle - so figure considerably more if you're having someone else do all the work. The drivetrain and suspension on this vehicle has about 50k miles. Would I swap it for a used Aero estate, say 2001 or '2 that had 50k miles - I don't think so. As far as I'm concerned, putting a little money into the 9000, isn't such a bad idea...
