What to look for...

I am thinking about getting a 9K and in reading the posts here I see mentions of a series of things that have "usually" been fixed by the time a car has 75+ K on it.
In general, I know the auto trans is an issue. Motor mounts, too, but how do I check those?
I don't want a car with a ton of miles, so 96s and 97s are likely choices.
Are there model-year specific things to watch for?
Could some of you 9K experts give me a laundry list of what to be checking out? The indy who works on my old C900 says 9Ks keep him in business, so I am a little unsure about getting one, but I'd rather spend less than I would on a used 9-3 (am avoiding NG900s). I want to keep a budget of about 10K, hopefully including some immediate repairs, but I don't want to get soaked for a bunch of repairs I could have identified up front.
The indy also sez timing chains should be done at 100K, but I can't find a lot of evidence to support that claim.
I'm not in a hurry to buy, but am doing the due diligence.
Thanks in advance for all help.
Noel
