If it turns out to be the serpentine belt idler pulley, they're coming through in plastic these days. As much as I don't like the plastic, it works, and I can't complain about that. I got mine at Sobstory. In fact, I've gotten a few there.
I didn't see the chat. I changed my 80 amp alternator to a 115 amp alternator and that had no effect on the idler pulley type. I'm not sure exactly what the issue is there.
Garden hose, PVC pipe, and as Lu said, I've used dowels. I prefer the soft items like hose. I'm always worried that if I stick a rigid dowel in the wrong place, it'll go flying like a spear. But if that's all that comes to hand, I'll use it.
A doctor's stethescope actually works very poorly. It is designed to sit on flat skin and contact through a diaphram. Unless you get it exactly flat on the surface, it won't work - and it definately won't work on things like the bolt holding the axle of the idler pulley. Mechanic's Stethescopes have a thin rod at the end that you can put on small, irregularly shaped items. And, they're much easier to clean.
