Check the lighting relay, in the relay panel behind the fuse block. My info shows it on the right side 3rd row from front. That seems to be the most likely common component.
my 86, which became a parts car, had a mechanical headlight high/low switch. Did you feel a click in the lever when it worked, as opposed to hearing a relay? The advantage to the mechanical switch was that you could flash the high beams.
The switch eventually melted the contacts into the case such that the high beams wouldn't work. I imagine if the melting, probably from increased resistance of the contacts, is bad enough, all the lighting may be affected. Just as a tip, the 87 and on switch with a relay in the circuit will not work in the 86 mechanical switch circuit. The 86 as I recall had an extra contact, or vice versa, at the plug.
