Zimm rotors w/PBR Deluxe pads: Weird noises...

I installed Zimmerman cross-drilled rotors and PBR Deluxe pads on my front brakes about 6 months ago. As required, I allowed this set-up to break-in before doing any serious braking.
Since that period, whenever I do brake hard, the front brakes emit a "metal-on-metal" feel, as well as a rather loud groaning noise. After I have done any sort of hard braking, from that point forward (and during that current drive), the brakes have almost no feel, and actually require that I use more force on the brake pedal to stop the car. The sound/feel is similar to that of when the ABS kicks in, though there is no shuttering feeling at the pedal, so I don't think that is happening.
I had to brake rather hard and long recently, and when I pulled into the parking lot, I looked at my front wheels and could see a speckling of black dust on the rims (sort of in the pattern of the cross-drilled holes), I could smell a heavy scent of brake material, and I could feel the heat of the rotors was extremely strong. I know that there is a considerable amount of energy (heat) created when braking, esp. when braking hard, but this seemed extraordinary.
Any ideas as to what is going on? I have no brake dust to speak of, so it's not like the pads are eaten up already (and they shouldn't be since I've only driven about 6K miles with them).
I'm looking to install the same combo on my rears soon, but am a little leary now given these circumstances.
Any and all input is appreciated!!!!
Joe
