Removing the cat might give a little more power, but so will a high-flow 3" cat. Plus, by removing the cat altogether, you will have to "fake-out" the Trionic system since the 2nd O2 sensor now will not be installed. The ECU uses this sensor to match the content of the gases to the readings from the 1st O2 sensor and adjusts the air/fuel mixture accordingly. There is a way to do this, but I don't know it. It has been spoken about in previous posts (it involves some sort of jumper between the wires leading to the 2nd O2 sensor). If you don't do anything with this sensor, it will cause the CEL to illuminate upon start-up.
BTW: in reference to adding more power to an auto, it has been done by others before (as well as me) with no problems to report on. As long as you faithfully change the fluid every 10K - 12K miles, and manually shift the tranny when driving the car hard (do not let it kickdown by itself, go easy on the 1st-to-2nd shift, downshift at rpm's no higher than 4K, watch the redline), you should be okay. But note the longevity of it also has to do with how many miles you currently have on the tranny, as well as what the past maintenance history is.
