Having the exact set of tires on my 99 9-3SE convertible, I noticed the same things you mentioned. Once I replaced them, I didn't realize until after the replacement how harsh and noisy the Michelin Pilot HX's were. I also have a 96 9000CS converted to FPT that runs the stock size tire at 205-55-16. When your tires wear out, I would suggest going back to the stock size. It will be a little bit more comfortable with a small expense in handling. Also, just curious on your spouse's thoughts of the 9000 vs. the 9-5. My spouse is thinking of replacing our 9000 with a 9-5 wagon. Surprised to see the gas mileage difference between the two cars you have. I thought the 9-5 wagon was at least on paper to have better gas mileage than the 9000. Your experience with your 9000 is similar to mine with the gas mileage. By the way, I replaced my tires with Falken Ziex 512s that are much quieter, comfortable and grip better than the old Michelins. Also, they are rated at 360 vs. 140 for the Michelins, so they should last much longer. Price is almost one-half less than the Michelins.
