I believe that there is a different number of ribs on the 2.0L belts versus the 2.3L belts (one more on the 2.3L). If you put the belt on flush with the outer edge of the pulley, the belt is going to stick out that by that much from the rest of the pulleys. You can move the belt in one rib so that the belt is flush with the back edge of the pulley. This will bring the belt back in line. However, the real solution was to move the pulley from the old alternator to the new alternator, because there is always the possibility that the belt will jump because of the mismatch.
