A boost gauge is a sign of manhood (or womanhood, as the case may be), but I don't think it's precisely necessary. They come in handy diagnosting problems.
When you drive, you don't drive to the boost gauge. There are control loops that limit boost - you don't need to adjust it by driving technique. If you're concerned about transmission life, then turn down the boost limit - hmm, isn't that a LPT? But you want to be able to smash the throttle when you want, and the control system decides how much boost to run. You shouldn't need to watch the gauge. That's not how it's done in stock FPT cars.
The cleanest solution is to put in an instrument cluster from a turbo. However, the best solution is to put in a separate calibrated boost gauge. Check over on the Performance board. You mount the gauge down low and look at it when you need it. The stock gauge isn't calibrated, and really doesn't do much good other than let you know if you're in base boost or overboosting. A calibrated aftermarket gauge will give you more information, and will be easier to install. I'll bet that it'll run you less $$ than trying to modify your existing instrument cluster, or find one from a turbo.
