High temp guage indication

My '88 9k has always had temp at 10:30 or 11:00; much higher than the 9:00 o'clock that most claim to be normal. Doesn't SEEM to run hot, however. I changed the thermostat with no noticable difference. So did my brother five years ago when HE had the car. I've wondered if the temp sender might be out of calibration (which means "bad")? Now that I've finally got the A/C working, this becomes even more critical and I'd like to deal with it before the really hot weather arrives (Atlanta, GA). This problem is unaffected by speed. 75 or idle; same temp. So I don't think the fan has a thing to do with it. Back when my A/C was dead (and the compressor disconnected), I could leave it in "Auto" which forced the condenser fan on all the time - - - no difference in the temp guage. Thanks.
