sudden clutch failure

I was hoping to get some free advice here...
I have a 86 9000T, 174,000 miles (5 speed, obviously.) While I was driving tonight the clutch suddenly failed -- I felt all pressure disappear from under my clutch pedal, over the course of about 15 seconds. Now the pedal doesn't rest on the floor or anything, but it has just enough springiness to return to its raised position.
I tried to get a bit of a look under the hood and under the car, but I had just a weak flashlight, and it was raining, so I couldn't really tell what was water and what might be fluid, and I honestly didn't really know where to look. Perhaps it is too early to post here, but would someone be willing to give me a basic list of obvious things to check, and where to check them? Maybe it'll be clearer weather tomorrow.
Ah well, I was thinking recently that I should get back into riding my bike.
Much appreciated,
Devon
