battery... time to replace? long...

i have a saab 9000 cs, 1995. today, weather went from around 60 to 40F in about an hour and a half. i started my car and went to a friend's, parked it, came out after temp had dropped (hour and a half later). car won't start. has gas, so we jump it. it was so dead, the radio had to be reset. after jumping, it made the 30 minute ride home. the EDU volt meter said the battery was running anywhere between 12.9-14.6 volts during the ride home, depending on speed and if i stopped. i know they're not terribly accurate, but that's a lot of fluctuation. at start (when jumping) it indicated a cranking voltage of 8.6. lately i noticed cranking voltages were reading in the mid-upper 9 volt range, but battery didn't really give any indication it was on its way out otherwise.
two questions:
1. it would seem to be time for a new battery (label says it was made june 2000). am i right?
2. if i do get a new battery, is it safe to say that it is due to old age, and not my charging system, since the alternator (according to EDU) at least kept the battery running for the ride home?
thanks all
josh p
