I've owned Alfas, and own Saabs. No question, the 164 will be a blast to drive. However, a 12 year old Alfa is about the last car I'd drive 125 miles a day.
Alfa's are great cars, but on average, they lose a lot in the reliability area. You've churned 200K out of your Saab - do not assume anywhere near the same for the Alfa. There are folks that have gotten high miles out of Alfas, but not many folks. And you'll have to put significant $$ into maintenance, because most maintenance is mileage driven, and you'll be putting 30K miles a year on the Alfa.
It's not easy getting work done on Alfas, and not only are parts hard to find, (assuming you're in the US), they're the few parts more expensive than Saab's.
I'd say the Alfa is a great weekend car. If you put relatively few miles a year on the car, you'll run into those mileage-related failures less often. But if you're churning out the miles, you'll be running into failure frequently, and that will quickly sap any enjoyment from the car. Take it from me - if you drop into the seat every morning wondering if you'll make it to work, that will take the fun right out of it.
Good luck!
