I'm not a professional SAAB mechanic but, for reasons I won't get into, I've had quite a bit of practice lately putting in and taking out alternators on my 89s. You have to disconnect the battery ground cable, jack up and support the passenger side of the car, take off the wheel, take out the fender liner, relieve tension and remove the serpentine belt, remove the two mounting bolts for the alternator and the big and small wires. Be careful not to strip out the socket head on the lower bolt. The alternator will snake out.
Are you sure you don't just need a voltage regulator/brush pack? You can remove and replace that from below by taking off the oil filter so you can get at the two screws that hold it in.
