Well as MIchael said, you can have them clear coated. It would protect them further but then the expense goes up and for that you might as well have them professionaly done ($150 ea). Also consider that the clear coat will most certainly develope cracks, and discoloration and look like crap in a short time and that put's you back to square one. Besides clear coat is very sensitive to cleaners and such(only likes soap and water, nothing harsh). Michigan sucks (I'm from SE Mich by the way but now in South GA). Either way I've used this process and yes you will have to stay on top of the polishing, maybe once a month to keep them up but it's easier everytime you do it (figure just 2 coats of polish and 1 coat of wax, 10 minutes per rim max). Again, you asked on ways to save them and not have it cost you much. This is cheap and I'm sure it'll look better than what they look like now? I did this to my motorcycle rims and I simply repolish and wax once every 3 months now and they always look miror finished. Again, it's cheap and easy.
See Ya,
Phil
