It's usually way cheaper to find a clean used one in a wrecking yard than to rebuild one. Makes much better sense for a car that old.
You might also be able to find a 'running wreck' that can become the donor parts car for much more than the transmission.
Changing a transmission is probably a 6-8 hour job if you're not going to mess with the clutch. All the way around a $4000 job without the clutch sounds like a bad deal.
