Upper radiator hose - normal?

I was doing some tinkering on my car tonight after a 'spirited drive'. After opening the hood, there was the faint smell of anti-freeze. I didn't think much of it. As I was checking on something, I leaned pretty hard on the radiator end of the upper coolant hose, and to my dismay, coolant started spraying out near the radiator end. I checked the clamp, and it was as tight as could be, though I loosened it and pushed the hose as far forward as I could, and retightened. I checked the hose and could find no holes or cracks or damage of any kind. Curiously, on checking the fluid level in tne overflow tank, it was slightly higher than the MAX mark.
Should I have been able to cause this leakage with a fully tightened hose clamp just by leaning (not standing, mind you) on the hose?
I haven't restarted the car yet for fear of more coolant spraying out, but there has been no history of bad hoses with the car, and I believe this hose has already been replaced not too long ago...
Thanks in advance,
Aaron Gilbert
