The front oil seal isn't too bad. The right fender liner (front half) comes out with 8mm machine screws and it's right in front of you. The hardest part (for me) was breaking the front bolt. I used a helper holding the brake (in gear) and a really long helper bar. You take off the two belts (on mine - - might be only one on a '90) and the main pulley (also called a harmonic balancer). The seal is right there for the taking then and easily comes out with a screwdriver. They cost anywhere from $7.00 to 20-something depending on where you go.
I'm assuming you're referring to the front crank seal. If it's the rear one, the shop doing the clutch job should be strung up and tanned. Gotta pull the transmission again, if so. But that's not awful either. The left fender liner comes out and again, things are very visible. Something Saab did well on this model. 900NG is much more difficult on both ends.
And I agree that all that money invested doesn't guarantee that it won't get lonely and want more. A good junk yard and the ability to work on these cars is the only way I can drive one. Surprising how many mechanics won't touch a Saab. They are in no way worse than any other car to work on and in several areas considerably easier. CV joint and front bearing work is particularly easy. Anything inside the doors is fairly easy. Emissions is seldom a problem. Very few components. Mine always sails through with low numbers. Good luck.
