Oh boy... trying to describe what knocking sounds like...
The best thing I can come up with is "marbles in your motor". Sort of an irregular metallic ticking/tapping sound that appears at a certain amount of gas-pedal travel / boost. The "irregular" part is important - it's what distinguishes it from lifter/bearing/piston noise.
The sound level also tends *not* to increase with RPM, and there's the rub: since most other motor noises *do* increase with RPM, it's harder to hear knocking as speed increases.
Best way to hear your car knock is to floor it in 4th at about 30 MPH. As boost increases and RPM's near 3000 (for a 2-liter), you should simultaneously hear the noise and see your boost needle jumping downward as APC reduces the boost.
