Right, I had a '91 2.3l that went over 200k MILES. If I had known about the balance sprocket issues, that engine would still be running with over 300k miles. But it's a chance, anything can happen. I would try to work him down on the price of course. search for balance sprocket or timing chain on this board. Lots of reading.
This is the culprit, check out the teeth.
