Well there is no vacumn line associated with the tranny, there is a boost line for control under boost. The cable slack - tension would not affect the closed throttle shift points unless it it too tight, and then it would increase the shift speeds. One check for governor seals is to manually select the gears and shift up at about the right or sligtly higher speeds. If it is ok when manually shifting but not automatic, it is a sign the seal is bad. The pre 1994 trannys had a governor pressure test point. If there is any (<1 PSI) pressure there with the engine running and in gear, but wheels not turning, the seal is bad. If you decide to replace the seals find someone who has done it before. A mechanic who has worked on Saabs should know there is no vacumn line for shift control.
I know what you mean about kids, having had a couple. You will hear about some of their episodes many years later.
