If the ECON button was engaged the compressor was not running. What you had happen was a clutch bearing failure. Unfortunatly, this will generally result in ruining the front seal on the compressor and therefor requireing a new or rebuilt compressor, along with a flush and a new filter/dryer. As to the post question, the refridgerant is NOT the lubricant, a very specific type of oil is required depending on what type of refridgerant you are using and if it is a conversion. The oil/lubricant is carried all through the system as a mist, the leval of oil cannot be checked, unless a flush is performed adding oil can only be done based on aveage losses from the type of failure that has happened.
And yes you can learn to service your own system at home, expect to invest $600 for tools and materials to do it right from the start. The second time will let you use all these tools over and make you the hero of the shade tree mechanics.
