Especially if your compressor failed. It is about $30-$60, and the fact that your indie is insisting on it is a good sign. The filter/dryer has desiccant that absorbs any water vapor in the lines. Once you open up the system for more than an hour, the chances of the dryer getting clogged up is very high. A good flush of the condenser is also important to get rid of any compressor bits that might have been introduced into the lines.
I have had good luck with a Air Parts Online compressor, but I have also used one of the sources in Florida listed on Quasi's site, with good results. With one car (wife's Honda V-6), I couldn't locate a remanufactured compressor, so I had it rebuilt by http://www.autoaircompressors.com. Turn around time was 2 days, the price was right ($180) and it is still going strong after 2 years.
