Ever have the muffler packing come out the tailpipe?

I was driving along today, (909kt) and this woman kept honking at me at pointing at the back of my car. I pull over, and there is about five feet of what looks like a grey wig hairs hanging out of the tailpipe. I felt like a magician (as well as an idiot) standing there on the side of a busy street at rush hour and pulling never ending strands of material out of the tailpipe. I pulled out a least 50 feet of the stuff. I figured that it had to be fiberglass packing from the muffler, but in all my years of driving, I never had this happen. Right before it happened, the car started idling very rough, but cleared up when I accelerated somewhat. It must of blocked the exaust flow, until it built up enough pressure and blew out of the tail pipe. I've only owned the car for a few months, but the exhaust system looks fairly new and in good shape(don't know what brand it is). Hope the backpressure didn't cause any damage to the engine. The car isn't much noticeably louder now, but sure runs a lot better now. Anyone else ever have this happen?
TIA
Theo
