closing in on tcs problem

I've been dealing with a problematic tCS system on a 92 9000 turbo for about two months now, and finally feel like i have the symptoms detailed closely enough that someone should be able to diagnose.
origiinally i got the classic failure: throttle went out and car into limp mode. after that first time, however, car never agin went into limp mode -- just no throttle, nothing. However, if i shot uff and turn on again, the throttle comes back.
i bought a used APC/DI ECU and switched them out, but the car wouldn't even start with the new one in, so i switched back and sent it back. that got me thinking that maybe it wasn't even the ecu after all, even though the dealer told me it was. now i have been ovserving the phenomenon, and what happens is that the throttle only kicks out when the APC really kicks in (when the needle on the gauge hits the yellow). then the throttle goes out and i have the start over. otherwise, if i'm careful about accelerating, no problem at all.
any ideas? i know that the system is complicated and has many parts, but could this be the tCS valve? the throttle body? the ECU?
please help as i don't want to buy any more unnecesary parts -- car has 192,000 on it and not worth a lot of investment.
