OK, so the weather is hot so I finally installed an AC belt after going all winter without one in my 89 CDT with 160K miles. The AC is ok (my recirc flap motor broke and it's mixing outside air so the AC actually isn't that cold, just better than nothing. Is there a way to manually close the flap i wonder?) but the car is dog slow. I mean it feels really sluggish but is still perfectly driveable in a boring sort of way. The turbo gauge will no longer go to the orange/red border, even in ECON mode. I could be wrong but I don't ever remember it being quite like this, even before the belt broke 4 months ago. So, given that the compressor load is what has been added, is it possible that the compressor is putting an abnormal amount of strain on the car? The idle is OK and there is no bucking or anything when you switch from ECON to AUTO. Does it make sense that the turbo gauge would be affected by the added load? Does anyone know how much the AC belt/compressor load should normally affect performance?
Needless to say, I removed the belt, regaining 'normal' power. Any comments appreciated.
