Well I guess if you have all the right tools, a stand, and some fre time on you hands then why not rebuild yourself? I can't see a down side to this in any way and like you said you'd know everything would be NEW and you'd know all the small details that would put your mind at ease. Now I haven't done such a job but I've been part way and I'd tend to think the whole thing wouldn't be too hard. Maybe you're looking to save money doing it yourself, but please don't skimp on anything. If you're going this far, go all out I say even if it meant taking longer and buying parts as money comes through. This isn't something you'd want to do twice IMHO. Send that 2.3 head our for some work, replace most every sensor, rebuild some of the wiring harnesses and such.
Follow-up on my 2.3 head install done mid May:
I had done the job about 2 weeks after you did, I asked you about your results at the time. Got it all back form Lesco with #2 cams. Me and a friend did the R&R in 12 hrs. Threw in some 30Lb injectors, and all is well. Haven't taken boost past 14 psi yet but so far it's been very positive. Alot more power above 3500 rpms, pulls hard.
See Ya,
Phil
