I've replaced the middle and flex on my '95CSE with 122k, and middle and rear on the '95Aero with 82k. This is the third middle muffler on the Aero. Others have noted that their middle muffler tends to go earlier than the rear on 9ks.
My flex pipe went out last Winter. I kept looking for the source of the noise and could not find it, though guessed that it was coming from the area of the flex. The flex pipe inside the woven steel will break and not be visible.
Even in California, mufflers tend to rust from the inside out. So it could still be a bad muffler. You may want to take it to Midas, or some such place and have them put it on a lift and find the leak for you. Then you can pay their price, or check with some of the site sponsors for Starla or other option for replacement. Not too bad a DIY, esp in California! See Ari's old posts on replacement.
